The Party of the Century:   The Eclipse Party!!

On Sunday April 8st 2024 Cadron Creek Outfitters will host an eclipse party -- actually we will begin Friday evening with a barbecue and live music and carry it right through the weekend when solar eclipse totality hits the creek at 1:53 pm. Mark your calendars.  Wow!

October 29 -31, 2021 - Spookfest - Fears Abound
You may have survived Y2K and the COVID pandemic but just when you think you have faced your worst fears -- you haven't!  In fact you can't even imagine the many threats that exist to keep you awake at night.   Fortunately  our first annual Spookfest:  The Haunting of Pinnacle Springs offers more fun than fear albeit screams abound.   Activities include searching for the lost explorers on a very, very spooky nature trail with more eerie sights and sounds than one could ever encounter while venturing into the woods at night.   We never knew hosting a horror-themed, family-friendly experience could be so much fun.  From fun and campy to spine-tingling scary.  What a scream!!  We'll be back again --- Halloween, Thursday - Sunday, October 28-30, 2021.
June 15, 2019 - Annual Full Moon Float:  Goes Viral
For over a decade we have had an annual full moon float -- often nothing more than CB and a couple of good friends sharing a beer or two and checking trot lines.  This year was different:  this year the event went viral!  When word of our annual full moon float was picked up by several prominent websites including Only In Arkansas and NPR we were suddenly deluged with interest -- hundreds of inquiries from across the country. Even if we were able to launch one boat every minute there would still be people waiting when the sun came up.  So what could we do?  We cancelled the event.

Nevertheless, we knew there were "links, posts and shares" over which we had no control and that we best stay prepared.  Indeed!  Over 70 guests arrived that evening to float the creek.  We even had people that had never paddled before in their life and were here now to paddle an unknown stream in near darkness.  The night was long -- CB ran sweep and wasn't back at camp until long after others had eaten a feast of barbecue and had departed for the night.  Nevertheless, he was enchanted for days -- something about a thread of lights drifting down a lazy river as the moon darts behind trees and mountaintops that changes a man.
March 16 -18, 2018 - Cosmic Flux
We love our Flux Family.  With over a thousand people  camped out under the stars  for what was probably my all time favorite Flux Festival it was a awesome weekend.  A perfect combination of bluegrass, paddling and gorgeous people.  These family-oriented music and arts festivals always feature a strong lineup but this year we focused on" the best mountain pure" musicians you'll likely find in Arkansas:   Grandpa's Cough Medicine, Squarshers, The Crumbs, and Opal Agafia & the Sweet Nothings. Delicious food vendors. Craft booths.   Visual and flo artists. Workshops.  Lots of outdoor recreation -- hiking, fishing, bouldering, slack-lining, etc.   Best of all:   all this right here on the banks of the Cadron.  
June 17-18, 2017  Earthways Community Gathering!
We are so happy to have again sponsored the Arkansas EarthWays Community Gathering for everyone who cares.   Earthways has always been dedicated to teaching the skills of Earth-based people -- farmers, herbalists, gardeners, blacksmiths, home-schoolers, natural healers, folk musicians and artisans  -- and combining these traditions with modern technology to create conscientious and sustainable lifestyles.   By taking a proactive role in caring for one another and the environment we can offer a vision for the future in which all people, all living things and all of nature can exist together in harmony and peace.

There is an urgent need to build a sustainable future. We can smell the problem in the air;   taste it in our water,  see it in our littered roadways, crime-filled neighborhoods and blemished landscapes, and read about it in the newspapers.  We either march in the streets or take to the creek.

The solutions don't come easily. Building a simple life with fewer material possessions is not an easy task when one has never been exposed to the crafts and skills that underlie a sustainable lifestyle. EarthWays offers a forum, a network, and the education one needs in order to live in harmony with both Earth and one another.

December 28, 2015 - A 100 Hundred Year Flood

The Cadron hits a 100 Year Flood -- the second in the past ten years when the creek hits 22 feet.  Over 15,000 cubic feet of water per second or enough to meet the the daily needs of 100,000 people in less than 1 minute.  The floof put Eleven Acre Island and Pinnacle Springs Campground under water.   Campsite #1 seen here on the "high side" of the island could still be approached by boat while rushing waters on the upper side of the island carried picnic tables and benches into the treetops -- all were recovered and damage was slight.  Whew!

Questions and Answers

Shannon:  Really like the new store and all the improvements -- the place looks wonderful.  But when are you going to replace that old beat up van?    

Cadron Boy:  Well we purchased a "newer" 15 person passenger van last spring.   Air-condition and sound!  Put it to the test in a 3000 mile plus trip out to Wyoming last summer to paddle the Little Bighorn.  It's delightful and a real hoss when it comes to climbing bluffs!

Bob:   Is the fishing any good?

Cadron Boy:  That's a question I am reluctant to answer, but I think I can do so without letting go of any secrets.  First, the Cadron is a rich fishery -- on the right day with the right bait/lure you can catch hundreds of fish.  Reminds me of the Middle Fork of the Little Red.  Many of the fish will be small -- mostly bream (bluegills and longear sunfish) -- but there are a lot of Kentucky black bass to satisfy the best of anglers.   And those who are wise to the ways of the Cadron can find large catfish (5-20 pounds), large schools of crappie, and tail-walking largemouths of 3-5 pounds.  
 
All it takes is a cane pole, hook, bobber, string and a few crickets for a young child to spend an afternoon squealing and laughing..

Bob:  Are there any small-mouth bass? 

Cadron Boy:  No  there aren't any smallmouth on the Cadron -- probably because of a general lack of gravel and natural sedimentation arising from Muddy Creek on the East Fork of the Cadron.  Now I prefer the clean taste of a  Cadron bluegill  but when I get a hankering to catch a smallie I  don't have to drive far as both the South and Archey Fork of the Little Red have a fair number of smallmouth.  Using Pinnacle Springs campground as your base you can also enjoy fishing for record-breaking trout -- rainbows and brown -- on nearby Little Red River.

Pinnacle Springs
PINNACLE SPRINGS 

It is hard to look over our campground today and find signs of its rich history -- the Native American encampments and food plots, the terraces built by freed slaves, the Cargile homestead and outbuildings are chiefly lost to the passage of time.  Even the chalybeate springs from which the campground gets its name no longer are sought out for their healing properties.  

Fortunately some people have not forgotten our past and we get a lot of requests for information regarding Pinnacle Springs, the "ghost resort" that was  home to several bath houses, a large hotel, college and several businesses in the late 1800s.  As you paddle downstrean of Pinnacle Springs campground you will pass by the old ferry landing  and the two-acre city park that once graced the ridgeline overlooking the creek.  The principal spring is only a few steps away from the river (photo right) but unless you know the spot you'll likely float right by it never knowing that once hundreds of people visited the spring each summer to drink its healing water.   For those wanting to know more about the  Pinnacle Springs -- a heritage monument in our eyes -- please download the Word file or stop by and visit with Cadron Boy.
